About Me

A Rewarding Career

When I was a teenager, I couldn’t decide what career path I wanted to pursue after my high school graduation. While I wanted to earn a comfortable living, money wasn’t the only factor guiding my decision. I also desired to have a job that would allow me to help others in some way. If you’re searching for a rewarding career, consider counseling. Counselors have the opportunity to help people solve complicated problems on a daily basis. For instance, as a counselor, you might help a couple resolve marriage issues, aid a teenager battling an eating disorder, or assist an adult dealing with depression. I didn't end up becoming a counselor, but on this blog, I hope you will discover some of the most interesting aspects of being a counselor.

How To Fight Anxiety

by Marie Reid

Anxiety is a serious condition that impacts adults and children around the world. While many people use medication and coping strategies to deal with anxiety, counseling is also very helpful. If you are thinking about using counseling as a tool to overcome anxiety, you are not alone.

These are some ways people like you fight anxiety each day.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy can be used to address anxiety and other mental health conditions. Whether your anxiety is linked to a panic disorder, social anxiety, or something else, you can benefit from this form of therapy, also known as CBT.

This form of therapy addresses the way you feel about events and how that might contribute to feelings of anxiety. The goal is to shift your mindset and behaviors. The goal of this form of therapy is to replace negative thoughts with realistic ones.

Exposure Therapy

Exposure therapy is also very useful in some cases. Often, exposure to something that people are afraid of can be helpful in demonstrating that something may be harmless. Of course, exposure therapy does not mean that you are exposed to something that terrifies you immediately. Instead, it involves carefully curated steps that help you overcome your fears.

Exercise

Getting some exercise is a natural stress reliever, and it can also relieve anxiety. Even if you aren't able to hit the gym or don't like to exercise in the gym, you can get some exercise by taking a walk around the block or riding your bike.

Meditation

Meditation can also be useful in fighting anxiety. If you aren't a fan of meditation, your counselor can help you with some visualization exercises and other tools you can use to put yourself in a mindful position.

Eliminate Unhealthy Coping Mechanisms

While healthy coping strategies are very good for you, some ways in which people cope are not very healthy. This means that you might be turning to drugs or alcohol as a way to cope with anxiety and other mental health concerns. It is important that you talk to your counselor about any unhealthy ways you cope with stress.

Consult With an Anxiety Counselor

Many counselors treat anxiety, and you have many options to choose from. If you are still on the fence, attending even one session can be helpful in allowing you to explore the cause of your anxiety so that you can better combat it.
